Can you get life insurance in space?
Apollo 11
When Neil Armstrong predicted that the Apollo 11 mission to the moon had a 50% chance of success, it comes as no surprise to learn that life insurers at the time were more than reluctant to offer cover.
So the Apollo 11 crew had to think of something else, and what they came up with would be used as “pseudo insurance” all the way up to Apollo 16. They autographed postal envelopes, believing that their increase in value would step in as a financial buffer should something go wrong. If they didn’t make it the signatures value would increase dramatically for their families to cash in on.
Space Tourism
With the 50th anniversary of the moon landing coming at a time when the first potential commercial passengers into space are adding themselves to a growing list, some insurers are discussing the idea of offering policies for those participating in any future civilian expeditions into space.
Space Tourism is set to become a real thing in most of our lifetimes and should aliens, meteor strike or more likely mechanical failure bring an early demise to those first brave adventurers; they will want to make sure their families back on terra firma are looked after.
What about now?
Of course most of us cannot rely on our signature fetching thousands of pounds. Life cover is a serious consideration for many people, especially when it comes to protecting your family and loved ones from the financial impact your death would have.
The good news is that if you get your cover setup soon, should you become a space tourist in years to come plans would cover you automatically as they havnt got round to adding it as an exclusion!
